Spiritlight

Lampyridae animalux

Spiritlight (Lampyridae animalux) is a species of bioluminescent beetle. It produces blue light from its abdomen to attract the opposite sex of the species. The insect lays its eggs on the ceilings of caves and caverns. When the larvae hatch they make a thin, silk thread with the end covered in sticky fluid. This line is dangled below the larve and the larve emits a blue light which is refracted through the glassy thread. Most of the light is refracted and emitted in the sticky end of a thread which attracts smaller prey which sticks to the fluid and is pulled upward into the larva’s mouth.
